In this part of the website we have books, articles, and surveys about the work that ODAC does.

Video
The video The right to know; The Fight for Open Democracy in South Africa was produced for ODAC by Green Delta Media in 2007. It records the struggle for housing and water in two communities ODAC has been working with, and how the right to information has supported those struggles. Sections of the video can be viewed here.

Books
The book Whistleblowing around the World; Law Culture and Practice edited by Richard Calland and Guy Dehn was released in 2004 by ODAC. It is a book about whistleblowing, and those men and women who witness wrongdoing and choose not to stay silent. Copies of the book are available from ODAC. Some sections of the book can be viewed here.

The book Right to Know, Right to Live, edited by Richard Calland and Alison Tilley, was released in 2002 by ODAC. It argues ODAC’s premise that the right to information is a leverage right in respect of social and economic rights, and can be used to demand development and accountability from the state. The book is now out of print. Some sections of the book can be viewed here.

Surveys
ODAC worked with Open Society Justice Initiative to produce Transparency and Silence; A Survey of Access to Information Laws and Practices in 14 countries.  Published in 2006, the survey is available at www.justiceinitiative.org

ODAC commissioned Markinor to produce a survey of attitudes to the right to know in 2006. The survey reveals a high level of awareness of the right to know, but lack of understanding of the mechanisms needed to enforce rights, and surprising pockets of resistance to the value of whistleblowing. The survey report is available here.
