The right to know - or Freedom of Information, as it used to be known and still is in some quarters - has an intrinsic value for the media. After all, the getting of information is the central purpose of the media, and getting access to information held by government is part of what the media do. In South Africa, this can be done via our unique laws that provides a right of access to information to both publicly and privately held information, and which protect whistleblowers when they speak out.
