National and Conventional Arms Control Committee releases documents

On the eve of Freedom day Celebrations in South Africa, The National and Conventional Arms Control Committee have released documents of its dealings to the Open Democracy Advice Centre (ODAC). ODAC is acting on behalf of the South African History Archive (SAHA).

SAHA is taking the NCACC, The President of the Republic of South Africa and the Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development to court. This is the initial process in attaining other outstanding documents for the main PAIA application scheduled for the 17th of May 2010.

The documents received are:

  1. Copies of the annual reports of the NCACC for 2005, 2006, 2007.
  2. Copies of the reports that have been issued to the United Nations Register of Conventional Arms in accordance with section 23(1)(a)of the Act by the NCACC for the years 2003,2004,2005,2006,2007,2008.
  3. A copy of weapons category list together with an explanation for each category.

PAIA gives effect to the Constitutional right of access to any information that is held by the state and any information that is held by another person and that is required for the exercise or protection of any rights.

The handover of documents took place at the North Gauteng High Court B, Palace of Justice building at 10 am
