ODAC has a strong presence in the African region. The research unit is the consultancy arm of ODAC that provides institutional support on access to information issues to the advocacy community on the continent. We help our partners in different African countries to develop their Freedom of Information Bills, assist them in developing strategies for the campaign on freedom of information and how to give effect to this right in the absence of a clear legislation. We also conduct research on access to information on specific subject areas. Our aim is to link the right of access to information to the realization of socio-economic rights for people on the continent. We are currently doing this through a research process that seeks to link the right to information to the right to education in 7 countries in Africa. The countries we are currently working in include DRC, Angola, Zambia, Malawi, Uganda, among many others.
We are also currently undertaking a litigation project that seeks to test the constitutional guarantees of the Right to Information in the constitution of Malawi, DRC and Angola
